4 Types of Equipment Asset Disposal

Updated: Sep 28, 2020

There are four main methods of equipment asset disposal available if you are trying to clear out your old under-productive and under-utilized equipment. Some require a lot of work on your part. Some require partnering with an equipment dealership. If you read to the end of this blog post, you will learn that Leavitt Machinery is excited to offer a fifth way for recycling or dealing with your aged equipment!

#1 – Disposal by Auction

You can always dispose of your old units through an auction. Typically, you are responsible for organizing freight, and you might have to pay for inspections and repairs. Most auctions are unreserved. This means that the sale price won’t be fixed, and it might sell for a very low price.

#2 – For Sale by Owner

You can always try to sell your equipment yourself! There are plenty of different sites online, but keep in mind, you are responsible for everything! You need to list the item, pay any related account or marketing fees, handle incoming calls, and show the machine to potential buyers. But this way you are 100% in control of the final sale price.

#3 – Trading In

Looking to replace your under-productive equipment? Some machinery dealers will happily take your old unit as a trade in. This might help reduce the price of your new unit, but you are subject to what the dealer claims is a fair trade-in value.

#4 – Consignment

If you are lucky, you might find a dealer who offers consignment. An agreement will be created, and the machinery dealer will be responsible for selling your equipment. However, the dealer will be pushing to sell their own inventory over yours. They won’t have to give up a cut of the profits that way. This can make it take longer for your unit to sell.
